Need help with my 360 Empty Need help with my 360

people i just got an xbox 360, im trying to create a profile but it says i need a usb or a memory unit inserted now i tryed a 2 GB usb into the xbox but it didnt work i wanted to know does the usb have to be empty (no files saved on ) :/ ???? answer ASAP plz
